There is a mixed reception when it comes to home security cameras – whilst some love the idea, others feel uncomfortable with the idea of being watched.

However, there are many advantages that come with using CCTV and we believe it is something all should consider.

Requires Little Maintenance

One of the best things about security cameras is that they require little to no maintenance.

Once they have been installed, all you have to concern yourself with is viewing your surveillance footage whenever you need to.

Wards Off Burglars

As well as having little to no maintenance, having security cameras in the home signals potential burglars to stay away.

Merely the look of cameras alone is enough to scare away any threats as they know they are being watched.

Moreover, if a burglar was to be successful, you will feel secure in knowing that their image was captured by the surveillance.

These cameras are able to capture things which we cannot see and identify any issues which need to be made aware of.

With security cameras, homeowners have a peace of mind knowing that their home and family will inevitably be safer with this device.

Whilst it is true that it may be easier to call a professional in to do it, installation isn’t as difficult as many believe it to be.

Installing a security camera for your home is an easy task and only takes a few simple steps to master.

You Will Need

  • Steel fish tape
  • Masking tape
  • Ethernet cable
  • Power drill
  • Baluns
  • Laptop/Computer
  • Pencil
  • Electrical tape

How To

Step 1 – Choose A Location

The first step is to choose a location. The placement of your security camera needs to be suitable.

We would recommend placing it somewhere high up to allow optimal vision as well as somewhere in clear sight.

This is so that people are aware of the CCTV, warding off any potential threats.

If you are concerned about the camera ruining the appearance of your home, you don’t have to be. Because it is high up, it will be discrete.

Step 2 – Prepare For Installation

The next step is to prepare for installation. Gather up all of your materials (as mentioned above) and mark a hole for where you want the camera cable to feed through.

You can mark this using your pencil however some kits come with a sticker template – this will be much easier in terms of marking.

Once this has been marked, take your power drill and drill pilot holes; this is where the mounting screws will go.

You should then drill another hole (make sure this is bigger than the others) in the center where the cable will feed through.

Step 3 – Run Your Cables

Next, you will need to run the cables to each of your cameras. The holes you have drilled for this should be either through your walls or your ceilings.

To make this process easier for yourself, we recommend you use steel fish tape, especially if you are threading these cables through difficult places.

Step 4 – Route To DVR Box

Once these steps have been completed, you will then need to run the cables to the DVR box. This part can be difficult for some, so it is best to have a helper with you for this step.

Drill another hole and feed the wires further through your home until you are satisfied with the location. From here, you can mount the DVR box.

Step 5 – Installing The Cameras

Now you have gotten through the hard part of threading your wires, you are now able to install the cameras.

To do this, start by connecting the cable coming out from the hole to the camera. Use the electrical tape to ensure that this does not get unplugged.

You then need to use a power drill to screw the camera to your house.

Step 6 – Connecting

Now, you can connect all the cables to the DVR. Do this by using an adapter and connecting each wire to its own port.

Step 7 – Setting Up The User Interface

After you have completed all of the physical steps, you will then need to finish off by setting up the user interface.

Although this may vary depending on what system you are using, it is usually fairly similar.

You will need to set up the date and a password and then go through a tutorial on how the system works. Once that is completed the system is up and ready to use!
