But here’s the thing, after you install it you find yourself wondering if these wonderful pieces of gear record all the time.

If you’ve purchased one for surveillance and security then it’s likely you’re going to want constant coverage of your home.

If you find yourself wondering about this, then you wouldn’t be the first!

In this article, we’re going to give you a total overview of Ring Cameras and how their recording works.

We’ll explore this with reference to some of the most modern versions of the product, to determine whether or not they support 24-hour recording.

We’ve also included a short FAQ to explain some of the more technical terms in this article.

How Do Ring Doorbells Work?

We’re going to start with the basics to make sure we’re on the same page.

A Ring Doorbell is a popular doorbell that comes with a motion sensor that detects up to 30 feet in front of your door (or wherever else you might have installed it).

This motion sensor means that whenever it senses motion within range it will activate and start recording.

This doorbell is usually bought for one of two main purposes – either for security or to see who’s at your door before you open up.

One of the best features of a Ring Doorbell is a two-way microphone that allows you to talk before letting anybody in!

In recent years with the rise of on-demand package delivery from marketplaces such as Amazon, package theft has become a more prevalent problem.

Ring Doorbells are perfect for catching them red-handed, and having the appropriate footage to report the crime to authorities.

Do Ring Doorbells Always Record?

If you’ve bought one of these products to have 24/hour recording coverage, we’re sorry to inform you that they don’t quite work like that.

As mentioned above, Ring Doorbells are equipped with a motion sensor that is connected to the camera that only activates when it senses someone (or something)is near.

This means that you are only going to get coverage at certain times. It’s designed like this so that it is efficient and only records when it needs to.

The good news is that a Ring Doorbell motion sensor is quite reliable, and it’s likely that you will get footage whenever you need it.

It’s one of the most high-tech features of this product and you’re generally able to rely on it to capture the footage that you’ll need, especially if you’re trying to prevent crimes such as package theft.

How Does A Ring Doorbell Work?

Do Ring Cameras Record All The Time?

A Ring Doorbell is usually linked up to your home’s Wi-Fi. Its content can be accessed via an application that you can download via the app store.

When the doorbell records something, you’ll get a notification and you’ll be able to access everything that it has captured for you.

There is also a wide variety of History features that allow you to save clips and instances that somebody is at your front door or around your property.

How To Get More Coverage From Your Ring Doorbell

If you’re looking for much longer video footage from your Ring Doorbell, thankfully there are some settings you can play with in order to achieve it.

What you’ll want to do is navigate to Device Settings within your Ring app, and then search for Video Settings.

Once you’re here, you should be able to see a setting called ‘Video Recording Length,’ tap on this to have a deeper look at the recording length.

The bad news here is that the maximum setting you can choose is 2 minutes. This is much better than the original 50 seconds setting, but if you want additional coverage then we highly recommend that you make this change.

Another thing you can do to increase the coverage of your Ring Doorbell is to increase the motion settings.

Just as we did above, click the Ring App and navigate to Motion Settings.

Once you’re here, there will be a setting called Motion Sensitivity and there will be a slider that will help you to adjust the general detection sensitivity of your Doorbell.

The Max setting here (which has no measurement), will allow you a lot more coverage.

This will be the closest you can get to long recordings, but just note that if you push your motion detector up you’re more likely to get random recordings that won’t be anyone interacting with your door.

This can happen especially if your door leads out into a busy area such as a street or road.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it! Unfortunately, Ring Doorbells don’t give you total coverage, nor do they record all the time, but they have been created to give you windows of recordings for when you’re most likely to need it.

We hope that this article has given you insight into how your new Ring Doorbell works and that you now feel more confident in using it. If you still have some questions, check our FAQ below.
