Arlo Vs Ring: Wireless Security Camera Showdown

In the short time that they have been around, security cameras have progressed a lot! They have come such a long way that the market is now oversaturated with a variety of different models and brands.

Many of these brands you can feel free to ignore, but right at the top of the market are a select few reputable brands whose names you will definitely go to.

Arlo Vs Ring: Wireless Security Camera Showdown

They are our go-to options for wireless security brands, because they are reliable, provide excellent support, and have a fantastic market reach.

Two of the most prolific of these wireless cameras would be Arlo and Ring. Both of these companies were early on the scene, and both specialize in DIY home security.

But how to choose between them?

In this article, we will highlight the similarities and differences between Arlo and Ring wireless security cameras to help you make an informed decision on which brand would be best for you.

So, if this is something of interest to you, then read on for more!

An Overview Of Ring And Arlo

Both Ring and Arlo are some of the best in the business. They both have a similar business model.

However, the main difference between them comes from their respective product lineups.

So, this makes it a lot easier to choose between these two businesses depending on your preferences and needs when it comes to wireless home security cameras

It is also important to note that both the systems are controlled exclusively by apps on smartphones. So, if you want to make the most of your experience then the app is vital.

Not only that, but the differences, in this case, are substantial. It is important to pay close attention to both the user interface design and the features of both companies when deciding between them.

We will take a closer look at this in the article below!

Ring: A Deeper Look

Ring has its origins as Doorbot, which first originated in 2013. Doorbot was slow, unreliable, and clunky. Overall, not a great product.

However, it managed to capture the heart of wireless camera enthusiasts all over the world and earned significant revenue from this.

After that, the company rebranded itself as Ring. They decided to totally redesign their doorbell.

This proved to be extremely successful and helped to build Ring’s reputation as a reliable and important business in the security camera market.

Ring chose to capitalize on this success by bringing in new products. They diversified their brand into producing home security cameras, and later on, decided to introduce a whole new home security system, as well as smart lighting products.

Amazon is now a parent company to Ring, having acquired it in 2018.

Arlo Technologies: A Deeper Look

Arlo’s origins start with Netgear. Netgear was a network equipment manufacturer, and Arlo was part of its brand. In 2015, they released their first-ever Arlo security camera.

When they earned their reputation in the market, they decided to release many new varieties of their unique camera.

In 2018, after numerous deals with many retail outlets, Netgear decided to develop Arlo into its own company. However, it does retain control of the company, since it has kept the majority of its shareholding.

Today, Arlo focuses on home security cameras. It also focuses on doorbells and has a different approach to differentiation in the market when compared to Ring.

Arlo VS Ring: The Products And Features

Let’s check out some of the products and features of both Arlo and Ring!

Both businesses are competitors in the wireless security camera market, but there are some key differences in their various products.

Ring has focused on doorbells for a very long time, and they now have a range of doorbells that are tailored to various needs, like professional installation, apartments, and many other options in a variety of finishes and colors.

On the other hand, Arlo has one video doorbell product only. It comes with both wireless and wired power options.

Additionally, Ring has a far more varied selection of camera models.

It places a great focus on the home security alarm, known as Ring Alarm, and it offers a wide range of other devices like contact sensors, smoke, and outdoor smart lighting.

These can all be attached to the base station of the Ring alarm.

On top of this, this system is compatible with a wide variety of third-party products, when using something called Z-Wave. Z-Wave is a monitoring service that provides a great service when it comes to your home security system.

Meanwhile, Arlo mainly focuses on security cameras. It releases multiple upgrades that have proven to be successful, while still maintaining a range of models at various prices.

The mentioned upgrades primarily focus on improvements to the video camera quality. There will be small variations to other hardware features.

So, this means that Arlo offers products with a far superior video quality for the majority of its lineup when compared to Ring because Ring sticks with 1080p.

In addition to this, Arlo also focuses more on the convention market of home security, and this can be seen with their Arlo Security System.

This system features a multi-functional sensor, a keypad base station, and a professional monitoring service if you invest in their highest subscription plan.

This security system is a little more simple than Ring’s security system, but Arlo may expand it in similar ways, so keep an eye out for any developments in this area!

Arlo Vs Ring: Connectivity

Now, let’s compare Arlo and Ring based on connectivity! When it comes to connectivity, all of the security cameras that are made by Arlo need a base station.

However, many of them are now able to connect to Wi-Fi, just like Ring cameras.

Additionally, this Arlo base station features a variety of additional features, like local video recording. However, it will, unfortunately, create a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network in your household, which can create a lot of channel congestion.

When it comes to the integration of smart home systems into your home, then Arlo works much better than Ring would.

Ring is limited solely to Alexa from Amazon, while Arlo can connect to Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, and AppleHomeKit (provided you have the case station.)

Arlo Vs Ring: Basic Features

Both Arlo and Ring have outdoor and indoor cameras. These cameras will include two-way talk, sirens, motion seniors, spotlights, and night vision. The majority of them will also have battery packs that can be replaced when necessary.

In general, Arlo products will have wider viewing angles at every price point when compared to the equivalent products from Ring.

However, this is not such a huge difference that it becomes a significant factor in choosing between them.

Now, when it comes to aesthetics, both Arlo and Ring wireless security cameras will come in either black or white.

Arlo will offer a variety of different colored and patterned silicone skins, all of which can fit over the body of the camera.

Meanwhile, Ring cameras will usually keep a lower profile. They are vertical in shape.

While Arlo’s cameras usually protrude further from their mountain surfaces. This gives the latter more flexibility when rotating.

Now that we have covered the basics of hardware, we need to check out the differences in the software features.

However, first, it is important to compare and contrast the important categories of wireless security cameras.

Arlo Vs Ring: The Video Doorbells

First on our list is the respective video doorbells from Arlo and Ring. The cameras we will be comparing are:

  • Arlo: Essential Doorbell
  • Ring: Video Doorbell 4

Arlo Essential Doorbell

  • Removable battery
  • Has support for Smarthome
  • A 1536p HDR camera

Ring Video Doorbell 4

  • WiFi is dual-band
  • Pre-roll (four seconds)
  • 1080p camera

As always, Ring has chosen to stay with their 1080p camera for their video doorbell. However, now it comes with a pre-roll of four seconds and night vision in color.

These features allow this video doorbell camera to keep a video buffer.

This means that when it detects motion, it will save the previous four seconds before the motion started, and thus it will bypass the biggest problem that comes with wireless security cameras – totally missing the start of an important event.

Furthermore, you will receive plenty of notifications, including a rechargeable battery, person detection, and configurable motion zones.

Not only that, but the cover plate for the camera can be changed for a plethora of finishes, so you can find one that best suits your home.

This differs from the Arlo doorbells, that only come in black or white.

Finally, Ring has an array of different doorbells, so if this one does not suit your needs, then there are plenty more to choose from. Meanwhile, Arlo has significantly less, so you are presented with limited options in this instance.

Now, the Arlo doorbell is an excellent alternative to the Ring doorbell. For one, it has a better camera resolution, it has broader smart home integration options, and it supports a plethora of motion detection types (more than Ring.)

Additionally, the aspect ratio of the camera is 1:1, and it has a 180-degree street view, which allows you excellent coverage.

This applies to the area directly in front of your door, or wherever the camera is placed, as well as the general outside area surrounding the camera.

As for the video quality, it is fantastic! The same can also be said for night vision. However, with night vision, it is important to note that the zoom can get quite blurry because the resolution is not high enough.

Arlo Vs Ring: Entry Level Cameras

  • Arlo: Essential Spotlight
  • Ring: StickUp Cam

Arlo Essential Spotlight

  • Optional solar
  • Siren and Spotlight
  • 1080p camera

Ring StickUp Cam

  • Option solar
  • Removable battery pack
  • 1080p camera

If you have a tight budget, then you do not need to worry about getting a camera of quality.

Both Arlo and Ring have great products for those on a tight budget, and even though they are more expensive than other cameras from other companies, they’re still low-end, and it’s worth paying that little bit extra for the features and quality you will be gaining.

So, there are different features for either camera, both with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to the Arlo essential camera, it has almost the same siren and spotlight functions as its more costly counterpart.

Meanwhile, Ring has chosen a removable battery pack, meaning it has a wider variety of power options.

Ring also offers StickUp Cam indoor cameras which can be configured so they stand up on a shelf, base, or flat surface. They can also be mounted onto the wall.

Arlo has a different Essential camera for this function, and it is a much more simple version of their spotlight camera.

When it comes to other features like night vision performance, then both of these cameras are extremely similar. So, the decision between them will come down to little things such as individual aesthetics and wall-mounting, etc.

Arlo Vs Ring: Spotlight Cameras

  • Arlo: Pro 4
  • Ring: Spotlight Cam

Arlo Pro 4

  • Mounts magnetically
  • Night vision in color
  • 2k HDR Camera

Ring Spotlight Cam

  • Dual battery packs (removable)
  • Dual spotlight bars
  • 1080p Camera

Both of these cameras can connect to Wi-Fi, while Arlo can also increase the camera spec to 2K, including night vision in color, and HDR.

Aside from this, the main difference between these two cameras is their respective spotlights. Ring’s output is a lot brighter than Arlo’s. This is because the LED bars on either side of the camera are quite large.

Additionally, the Ring Spotlight Cam features a dedicated PIR motion detector which decreases the battery usage, particularly for motion triggers.

Whatsmore, it has increased run time thanks to the two extra battery slots if this is something you want.

When it comes to brightness, then the Ring Spotlight Cam is much better. It is a powerful deterrent and is great at brightening even smaller areas.

It is able to capture situations in dark areas, and it can provide the necessary light when you are walking through an area. However, it is by no means a floodlight camera.

When it comes to night vision, Arlo’s camera is of excellent quality. While the Ring camera will blur any movement that is too distant when it is in spotlight mode, Arlo will not.

Both brands’ spotlight cameras will support solar panels.

Arlo Vs Ring: Floodlight Cameras

  • Arlo: Pro 3 Floodlight
  • Ring: Floodlight Cam Pro

Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight

  • Removable batteries
  • LED panel (3000 lumen)
  • 2K HDR camera

Ring Floodlight Cam Pro

  • Motion detection (3D)
  • Led lamps (2000 lumen)
  • 1080p camera

When it comes to floodlight cameras, then you want to find some with extra visibility and deterrent. Both of these floodlight cameras meet these criteria. In the case of the Ring Floodlight Cam Pro, you will find this especially true with smaller areas.

Both of these floodlights are specially designed for larger spaces and both do this well. However, the LED panel for the Arlo Pro Floodlight Cam can create up to 50% more output when you place it on the furthest end of the range.

Additionally, Arlo is great for its color night vision option. It has a better performance when it comes to its low-light camera option when compared to Ring’s floodlight camera.

However, this will only work when there is still some form of light available, so on overcast or moonless nights, you will receive infrared night vision in black and white.

Meanwhile, Ring has a brand new feature on their Floodlight Camera. It is motion detection in 3D, that comes complete with a bird’s eye view of the area.

It attempts to track the exact distance between an object in motion and your camera. It will showcase this movement as a top-down track-through field view.

This is an interesting feature, but it is not massively beneficial compared to regular video recording.

What Are The Features And Performance Quality Of The Ring And Arlo App?

Now, there is a clear difference between the two respective brands – their apps. Let’s take a closer look at them!

The Arlo App Vs The Ring App

Ring has attempted to improve its app in more recent years. These days, it has an extremely competitive platform thanks to its range of new features. Its navigation design also stands out as one of amazing quality.

When it comes to design, the Ring app looks sophisticated. It is modern and clean, and everything is easy to find, making the app simple to use.

You can find both the security and account settings in the Control Center, and you will be able to find anything you need relating to modes, camera controls, diagnostics, and settings on the Camera Settings page.

To find this page you will need to go to your device list, then dashboard. Alternatively, you can find it in the timeline view of every camera in your household. Easy!

In complete contrast, Arlo’s app feels very dated, and many people have reported that they find it difficult to find the settings that they need. This is primarily due to the settings being hidden in arbitrary places or filed under different settings.

For example, the Smart Notifications that are specifically for the camera which includes vehicle/animal/person detection are filed with the general settings.

Additionally, motion detection can be found under “Modes”, and you will find “package detection” in a totally different place to where you think it should be.

However, despite its flaws, the Arlo home security system app still has some excellent features. Let’s check them out!

Motion Detection

When it comes to home security, motion detection is absolutely necessary. You will need your camera to take pictures of important events, in case of an emergency, something piques your interest, etc.

You also need your motion detection feature to record things of importance without recording lots of things that are not important, because this will make it more difficult to find the important things you need to see.

Both Arlo and Ring cameras do this well. They both adjust for motion sensitivity, limit recordings to specific events, allow you to target vehicles, animals, people, or all three, schedule camera behavior, create irregular motion zones, and more!

In this case, Arlo also features a package detection feature, although it is important to note that it is only active for one camera at a time. Still, this is better than Ring, which does not offer this service at all.

On the other hand, Ring has many more motion detection options. Ring allows you to press snooze on all of your cameras separately, so you can mute the ones that you need to without affecting the other cameras.

Arlo only allows you to snooze all of your notifications for a set amount of time.

So, Ring’s features here are more useful, especially if there is an event happening that would trigger the camera’s motion detection, like a garden party or a pool party.

Modes are excellent when it comes to privacy control. These are similar to alarm states. These states, like Home, Alarm, or Disarm, all have presets that can control the camera, which permits you to swap and change behaviors around.

Both Arlo and Ring cameras feature modes. Ring offers the three previously mentioned only. For every one of these modes, you will be able to decide if a camera can record motion or begin a live view.

However, you cannot do other things that would be useful, like switching on a light.

However, Arlo offers much more flexibility because you can create custom modes for every camera. So, you can make your own rules for the modes that allow you to provide security for your home in the way that you see best.

The combinations you can make are also unrestricted.

Options For Video

Video recording for both Arlo and Ring home security systems is very much the same. The quality of this will vary depending on your connection to the Wi-Fi network as well as the internet performance.

Both of these cameras permit you to specify audio recording, letting you decide whether you want it or not. And, Ring permits you to adjust the duration of recording when your camera detects motion.

Meanwhile, Arlo allows you to specify the quality preference of your video. This is mostly in the interest of preserving battery life. However, it also allows you to save space if you are locally recording via a Smart Hub.

Arlo also has a feature called “Zoom and Track”, and this is available for cameras that are above the Essentials range.

When the Zoom and Track feature is in play, it is able to zoom in on any motion the camera has detected and begin to track it. This permits you to focus on whatever is moving.

Here, Arlo’s high-resolution cameras are particularly useful.

This is also an important feature to consider when trying to choose a home security system brand. You should look for something that notifies you quickly and efficiently when something of interest happens.

Something you should especially be looking out for is rich notifications. A rich notification is a notification of a still image of whatever caused the camera to spring into action.

You will be able to see the culprit at the moment should you need to look.

This saves you so much time and improves the camera system’s value quickly. This is because you will not need to open the camera home security system app every time you need to see what triggered the notification.

When this happens, it is often the case that people stop checking because the event is usually nothing to worry about.

However, a rich notification does not necessitate such effort and as such, leaves you feeling safer because all you need to do is glance at the rich notification and decide from there whether or not you need to take action.

Both Arlo and Ring have an excellent rich notification feature. Although, it is important to note that Arlo does go a step further and offers an animated preview with their higher models.

This is an animation akin to a GIF, as opposed to a mere frame.

Both of these apps come complete with options to mute your notifications, and Ring goes a step further to provide a selection of durations (presets)  for specific cameras.

Meanwhile, Arlo only has one single mute button which will silence all notifications on the app for a select period.

Video Event Viewing

Another important feature you need to consider when selecting a camera is access to video recordings. You will need easy access to it, and in this case, Ring shines.

When compared to Arlo, it will begin the stream much faster. However, it is important to note that this will vary on an individual basis.

Arlo’s video storage is satisfactory. It stores all videos in a “library”, in which every clip is listed in chronological order and comes complete with a thumbnail.

You will be able to select a date and view all of the clips taken on the day you have selected. And, you will be able to filter the videos based on the type of event (think videos of people, animals, etc.)

You also have the ability to filter the videos by device.

Meanwhile, Ring has a totally different approach. Instead of a library view, Ring opts for a timeline view.

There are snapshots that are regularly updated for each camera, and you will also be able to view a timeline continuously, that includes events recorded by type.

It will also show snapshots of the event taken periodically that fill in any gaps there may be.

Ring’s Timeline view allows you to quickly view everything you need to, and you only need to rotate your phone to switch between cameras.

Both Ring and Arlo offer a decent level of functionality if you do not subscribe. You will be able to access basic notifications and the live view.

And, if you have a Smart Hub, you will be able to access local video storage with Arlo, although it only works when you are at home.

If you want remote access to the cameras in your home, cloud storage, and all of the other smart features, then you will need to pay subscription fees.

The subscription fees for both companies start at $3 a month, and with this, you have access to one camera.

You can pay $10 a month and have access to an unlimited number of cameras.

With both of these fees, you will have the choice of a 10% discount for certain future buys.

Arlo will also offer a $15 a month subscription. Here, you will have access to recordings in 4K from the Arlo Ultra Camera.

With Ring, you can have 60 days of video storage, but with Arlo, you only get 30 days. Ring also offers a warranty for all of the cameras.

But, if you want access to the monitoring service, you will need the unlimited plan.  A similar system is in play with Arlo, if you want their security system, then you will need to pay the highest 4K tier fee.

Final Thoughts

Arlo and Ring are both home security system companies that offer a wide range of home security products to help you feel at ease.

The respective products offered by these companies are very similar, but there are a few differences between them, as well as the apps, and the features that are offered, that can help you choose between them.

We hope this article tells you everything you need to know about the wireless security cameras from Arlo and Ring, and helps you decide which is best for you.
